Azerbaijan Friendship Park built by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in Bağcılar and Khojaly Massacre Memorial which is located in the park built by Bağcılar Municipality were opened with a ceremony on 25 February 2018.
Assistant of President of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijani Deputy Diaspora Minister Valeh Haciyev, Consul General of Azerbaijan in Istanbul Mesim Haciyev, Governor of Istanbul Vasip Şahin, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mevlüt Uysal, Mayor of Bağcılar Lokman Çağırıcı, TDBB Secretary General Fahri Solak and several visitors from Azerbaijan and Turkey attended to the opening ceremony.
This Friendship Park is Connecting Our Peoples
Sabina Maharramova who started opening speech said that she was 7 years old when it happened and stated that “That night, Armenian fascists were too cruel even towards children, women and elderly people. It was very tough night.”
Assistant of President of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov said that “Even though today is a terrible day for us, I am very glad to be with you. On behalf of Azerbaijan, I would like to thank to everyone for this beautiful park and especially for Khojaly Massacre Memorial. This shows the value Turkey gives to our history and moral values and this is a bridge constructed between us. This Friendship Park will connect our people. It is also important for our next generations.”
Our Friendship is a Real Friendship
Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mevlüt Uysal stated that “As our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, we are real brothers of Azerbaijan. What Ankara’s means to us, so does Baku. We have understood our brotherhood better during recent events. We are going to open Azerbaijan Friendship Park all together as a symbol of our brotherhood and also to reinforce our friendship.”
Governor of Istanbul Vasip Şahin stated that cities are urbanized as long as the comfort level of their inhabitants is increased and he added that “In this manner, Istanbul is a city for which great effort have been shown. New understanding of municipalism which our President started has become very good guide for infrastructure area, superstructure area and also for social municipalism. Today, municipalities in Istanbul have become examples not only for our country but also our region and to the world.” Mayor of Bağcılar Lokman Çağırıcı specified that the park is one of the biggest two parks in Bağcılar and he thanked everyone who contributed for construction of the park.
After the speeches, Khojaly Massacre Memorial was opened by Protocol members in memory of 613 people who died in Khojaly in 1992.
Park was Built on an Area of 33 acres
The Park which was constructed on an area of 33 acres has children’s playgrounds, pergolas, pond, wooden panoramic view terrace, green amphitheater, ornamental pools, picnic areas, cafes, gymnasium, football and basketball fields. Additionally, there are three-floored underground parking lot, 3 fire stairs, 1 disabled lift, disabled car parking lot for 26 cars and 2 electric vehicles.
